MPHS Convention at INDYPEX 2007Report (photos below)The Military Postal History Society 2007 convention at INDYPEX July 6-8 in the Indianapolis convention center is now history. Director Tony Brooks arranged for an informal dinner Friday evening at the show hotel, the Crowne Plaza at Union Station, with 20 members and guests present.Saturday morning, president Al Kugel ran the board of directors meeting. Convention shows were confirmed through 2012. Chuck LaBlonde is firming up arrangements for the 2008 convention May 16-18 at the Rocky Mountain Stamp Show in Denver. Auction manager Myron Fox still needs help with the society auctions. At present he has sufficient material on hand for the next couple of auctions. Harvey Tilles furnished several designs for a new society logo with an eagle theme and one was selected by the board. The design will be used for stationery and signs and banners to publicize the society. Secretary Ed Dubin has accumulated back issues of the MPHS Bulletin as well as its predecessor publications so that they can be digitized and made available on DVD. Plans were also considered to prepare a disc version of the AEF book and its two supplements since they are now out of print. An MPHS award and certificate will be offered to APS World Series of Philately shows as a way of publicizing the society. A minimum of three military related exhibits will be required to award the medal. Al Kugel also led the membership meeting later in the day. The officers were introduced and a summary of the board meeting actions was reviewed. Members then introduced themselves and their collecting interests. Two special awards were announced at the meeting. Former Secretary Robert Kinsley was presented with the MPHS Outstanding Service Award for his work as secretary, a board member, the major revision of the bylaws, and preparation and distribution of the index to the Bulletin.
The Best Article award recipient was announced for the 2006 issues of the Bulletin. Michael Hoyt was the winner with his Homing Pigeons in Military Communications. Paul Larsen gave a brief summary of the ceremony for turning over of the Carolinas, Palaus and Marianas from Spain to Germany in 1899. Al Kugel then talked about Collecting and Exhibiting Military Mail. He reviewed how he got interested in stamp collecting, then military mail, then exhibiting such material, becoming a judge, and finally writing about military mail. His illustrations included items from the Civil War, Spanish American War, Boxer Rebellion, Mexican interventions, WW I, Haiti, Nicaragua, China, WW II, the occupation of Germany and Japan, Korea, Vietnam, and Operation Desert Shield.
