MPHS Convention at BOXBOROUGH 2005

Convention Membership Meeting

A good turnout of members was on hand at the annual membership meeting of the Society at Philatelic Show in Boxborough, Mass. April 30. President Myron Fox introduced the officers and directors and then presented two awards.

Secretary Robert Kinsley won the Writer’s Award for the best series of articles in the 2004 issues of the MPHS Bulletin. His diverse topics included Custer’s last stand, the role of the Belgian Congo in WW II, and Operation Overlord in WW II.

Russ Carter received the MPHS Outstanding Service Award for his ongoing research at the National Archives that has resulted in many publications for the Society. In addition to the three volumes of the 7th edition of the APO directory, the MPHS just released Russ’s book on War Ballots. The indefatigable researcher/author has ideas for additional publications.

Director Al Kugel spoke briefly on the fundraising progress to create a special interest room at the American Philatelic Center in Bellefonte, as originally suggested by Ted Bahry. Al reported that donations and pledges totaled $15,000 which is just over half the goal of $25,000. Additional support is requested from members.

The main speaker at the meeting was Dr. Yamil H. Kouri, Jr. whose talk, “The Road to Santiago” discussed the Spanish American War and the details of operations at Cuba. He showed examples of insurgents mail, handstamp markings and labels used on mail destined to Cuba as well as sent to Spain, but interrupted due to the war. The Spanish fleet took refuge in the Bay of Santiago de Cuba. Other topics that Kouri touched on were the difficulties encountered by U.S. troops exposed to tropical diseases and prisoners’ mail.

The meeting guest speaker was Dr. Yamil Kouri, who spoke about the Spanish American War with details on operations in Cuba.

Al Kugel is presented with the Boxborough Philatelic Show 2005 Grand Award by Guy Dillaway (right: ExhibitsChair) for his exhibit "British Empire Intervention in Central Powers: WWI and its Aftermath."
Bob Rawlins receiving the MPHS Reserve Grand Award for his entry,
"U.S.Navy Submarines at War: WW II."

MPHS Webmaster Karl Winkelmann asked for members to contribute material for the society’s website, including interesting covers with brief descriptions.

Next year’s convention will be held at Washington 2006, and meeting time and date are being worked out with the show committee. The 2007 convention will take place at INDYPEX in Indianapolis in July that year.
