Introduction

This exhibit documents through contemporary postal material the participation of forces from New South Wales, South Australia and Victoria in the Allied effort to suppress the Boxer Uprising in China in 1900-1901. For larger political reasons, the British government wanted to present a commanding presence in the intervention but, due to the heavy commitment of its forces against the Boers in South Africa, it was short of troops. Consequently, its China Expeditionary Force was largely made up of native Indian infantry and cavalry, and a call went out to the other colonies for support.
